14.18 Requesting a Reference

May13, 2009

Dear Ms. Jonasz,

I would like for you to write a letter of recommendation for a job I want to acquire. I recently had a job interview with AAFES, which went well. The manager needs a recommendation letter sent directly to him. Who better than my own professor of two classes to write a letter of recommendation?

The position I am applying for is a manager spot. Taking your business classes made me confident in being able to fulfill the management slot. Enclosed I included the managers address. I want to thank you ahead of time for the favor. I look forward to your next terms class. Business Communication class.

Sincerely,

SUBJECT: Speech Summary Memo

To allow a better understanding of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr's famous "I Have A Dream Speech" I will further explain the purpose and intent of this address to the nation that 28th day of August 1963.

On that day Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. led a massive element to the Washinton Mall passing the Washington Monument to the Lincoln Memorial. King stated "I am happy to join with you today in what will go down in history as the greatest demonstration for freedom in the history of our nation." And so it was, King spoke about life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness as well as freedom. But these following opinionated facts are my motivation to pursue such a speech:

a. Dr. King's effective introduction was simply marvelous, he mentioned many inspiring points that include: a statement with two meanings, "America has given the Negro people a bad check, a check which has come back marked", "insufficient funds." But we refuse to believe that the bank of justice is bankrupt. We refuse to believe that there are insufficient funds in the great vaults of opportunity of this nation. So we have come to cash this check — a check that will give us upon demand the riches of freedom and the security of justice." And a statement that somewhat resembles an idiom it follows: "Now is the time to lift our nation from the quick sands of racial injustice to the solid rock of brotherhood". These are very powerful statements just reading them can bring a sense of understanding.

b. The statement "Those who hope that the Negro needed to blow off steam and will now be content will have a rude awakening if the nation returns to business as usual” I assume refers to evidence of effective overall organization. There will be neither rest nor tranquility in America until the Negro is granted his citizenship rights. The whirlwinds of revolt will continue to shake the foundations of our nation until the bright day of justice emerges." To me this means, the African-American race will not cease its actions until there is equality amongst all human beings alike, yet another powerful statement.

c. Dr. King also used the word "we" on numerous occasions which registers in my mind, a verbal signpost to create coherence or likeness. The use of the word we makes others feel as though they are alike in some ways and he's not just another guy trying to win my vote for compensation.

d. In this speech Dr. King also emphasizes the main points, freedom and liberty. That was his sole purpose for delivering this speech at such a time as this. Not considering the fact that this speech was awarded a Nobel Peace Prize the following year, 1965.

e. Dr King's focus on his audiences benefits were that of repetitiously using the term "negro" which delivered a sense of belonging to a certain category. I whenever using this terminology whatever was said I would know it was directed to me whether good or bad. This alone was not beneficial, The I Have A Dream portion of the speech considerably focused on the audience, no regards to skin color. f. The ever so warming tone Dr. King presented made me feel as though the speech was specifically directed to me. I assume many other people feel this way also.

Mrs. Jonasz, I hope this summary reaches you well. Please e-mail me upon reading, so that I may be able to answer any questions that you may happen to have.

Assignment 10.11 Unsolicited Proposal: Working From Home

April 27, 2009

Dear Ms. Cynthia Barry,

I believe that the company would benefit by telecommuting. Telecommuting is a preferred choice by a lot of companies in today's world. Meetings that required traveling, are now done over the Internet. Telecommuting can be done by videoconferencing (web cam), Voice over IP, Instant Messaging.
The company will save a lot of time and money with telecommuting. You will no longer need to travel long distances to your meetings. I am more than willing to install all the software needed to do so. There is a lot of companies we are able to use to host the companies meetings. Yahoo, AOL, and Skype all have options of Instant Messaging, video conferencing, and VOIP at no cost. All that it is needed to do is create an account with either company, since communication between users is free.
Since gas prices are high and I have to travel two hours to work each day, would you consider letting me do my work at home? I have all the proper equipment to be able to do so on my personnel computer. By saving time of traveling, I would be able to spend more time on programming, and host the companies meetings by teleconferencing. I will still come in on days of meetings and activities.
I hope you look into these options. A good manager like your self would adopt to today's new technology of telecommuting. If you have any questions or concerns I would be more than willing to address them.

Sincerely,

Jonathan Acevedo

And with your approval we would like to build one here on base.

Background

Denny's is most recognized restaurant in family dining. We have been around for more than 50 years, with approximately 1,500 restaurants across America, and still growing. The restaurant's are open 24 hours, 7 days a week, including holidays. This would make it convenient for everyone on post, since all the food places inside the camp close at 10 PM and open at 10 AM. The restaurant serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner meals at any time of the day.

Denny's restaurants are family oriented, which offers a casual dining atmosphere, at moderate prices. We are best known for serving breakfast around the clock. Our lunch and dinner menu are increasing in popularity with a variety of cravable burgers, sandwiches, salads and other entrees. We remain dominant for the late-night crowd with an emphasis on appetizers and desserts.

Proposed Plan

Camp Humphrey's will benefit from having a Denny's. With our restaurant on post you are guaranteed the following:
  • More Employment- Military dependants, civilian, looking for employment, or active duty looking to work part time, can apply for full time and part time jobs. Depending on your position, pay will start from $18 to $28 an hour.
  • Gatherings- We will host everything from from birthday parties, to business meetings.
  • Military discounts- We appreciate all the dedication, hard work and patriotism to our country, here will be a 15 percent discount to military personnel, retirees, and senior citizens.
  • Birthday's- We offer Birthday Club for children under 10 years and younger. Everyone 11 and older will receive a 50 percent discount off their meal.
  • BOSS Donations- 10 percent of our revenue will be donated to the Better Opportunity for Single Soldier's program.
It will also be convenient for those late night drinkers, to stop by the restaurant and sober up with one our late night specials. This will help minimize the amount of trouble soldiers get into, due to the fact of having alcohol in their system.

Staffing

Denny's will have three 8 hour shift available. Shifts will be 8 AM - 4 PM, 4 PM - 12 AM, 12AM - 8 AM. Each shift will have 2 cooks, 5 - 7 waiters, 3 janitors, 2 hostesses, and 2 managers.

Budget

The construction of Denny's on base will be no cost to the Army. We will pay $1,500 a month for the are the restaurant occupies. Employee salary should be from $15,000 to $18,000.

We look forward to your approval on letting us finally have a Denny's restaurant in Camp Humphrey's. We hope to satisfy every ones cravings with delicious Denny's meals. If everything goes as planned, we see our restaurant opening by Aug 10. If you have any questions, comments or concerns I will be more than willing to answer them.

Assignment 7.10

Gresham Parent-Teacher Association
1430 Grand Street, Gresham, OR, 97030

Board of Directors
Gresham-Barlow School District
P.O. Box 310
Gresham, OR 97033

Subject: Coca-Cola vending machines

Dear Directors,

Coca-Cola vending machines are one of the leading factors to student obesity. We would like for you to reconsider the Coca-Cola school contract.

We understand that the school board is heavily influenced by the income generated from the Coca-Cola contract. It is nice that the school was able to finally afford an electronic reader board and a sound system for the gym. But what about the welfare of the students? Soft drinks and snacks, which are high in calorie are increasingly under attack in schools. Understand that obesity has doubled in children and tripled in adolescents over the last two decades.

A lot of schools are adopting to setting higher nutrition standards for vending machine foods. Mississippi, along with other school districts, now only sells water and 100 percent fruit juice in their vending machines. They have not seen a loss in revenue by switching to healthier foods. According to the CSPI (Center for Science in the Public Interest), "Those school districts are doing well financially by doing good".

Please for the better of the students, adopt to healthier food choices in vending machines. We all want the best for the students, so changing to healthier foods in the vending machines shouldn't be a problem.

Sincerely,

Jonathan Acevedo, PTA committee
